A POOR INNINGS
MIDDLESEX PILE UP SMALL TOTAL AUSTRALIA FOUR FOR 128 Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. The Australian cricketers today began a match against Middlesex at Lord’s. The teams were as follow: Australia: Richardson, Kippax, Bradman, Fairfax, Grimmett, Hornibrook, Hurwood, Jackson, McCabe, Ponsford and Walker. Middlesex: G. T. Stevens, H. W. Lee, Hearne, Hendren, N. Haig, G O. Allen, Newman, Canning. Durston. Price, H. J. Enthoven. The weather was gloomy and overcast and the wicket seemed dead. Haig won the toss from Richardson and Middlesex batted. There was only a handful of spectators present, owing to the counter attraction of the Derby. The Middlesex batsmen made a sorry showing against Grimmett and Hornibrook on a lifeless wicket. The opening pair put on 48, but tbe wickets then fell in rapid succession. Hornibrook bowled very well, keeping an excellent length. Grimmett also worried the batsmen incessantly. Hendren batted for an hour, giving a deplorable display. The county’s batting was the worst so far against the Australians. The visitors had only scored 13 in half-an-hour. when Ponsford went out leg before for the fourth time in the course of the tour. Jackson ’was unusually restrained and Bradman, who scored steadily, monopolised the run-getting. He had made 36 of a total of 48 when he was bowled. Kippax was attractive, but Jackson made only 14 in 82 minutes. He went out when attempting a hit. With McCabe and Kippax together, play became much brighter. The hundred occupied 125 minutes. The appointment of A. P. F. Chapman as captain of the English team to meet the Australian cricketers in the first test match, commencing on June 13 at Trent Bridge, the Notts County ground, has gone uncriticised. England is taking the first test match with unusual seriousness. The critics pin much faith in the captain, and it must be admitted that Chapman is a skilful leader and a great and inspiring fielder. The “Daily Mail” says the England selectors have definitely chosen 10 players for the-first Test. All played for England in a recent trial. The only omission is Woolley. The last place lies between Woolley, Duleepsinhji and Leyland.
