HELP FOR UNEMPLOYED

WORKS AT HAMILTON GARDEN PLACE CUTTING From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. A special loan of £10,400 is to be raised by the Hamilton Borough Council for the relief of unemployment. This decision was reached at a meeting of the council this evening. It is proposed to spend the loan in making a cutting through Garden Place Hill, in Anglesea Street, and in the erection of a culvert over the Waitewhiriwhiri Stream at Maeroa Street. The total estimated cost of these works is £16,100, of which it is anticipated a subsidy of £5,700, representing half the labour costs, will be contributed by the Government. The period of the loan will be for 30 years, and it will be secured by a special rate of l-12d in the pound on the unimproved values of the ratable property in the borough. The Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow, in moving the resolution, said Victoria Street was at present the only level thoroughfare from north to south on the west side of the river. The proposed cutting would provide an alternative route to Frankton and part of Whitiora, and by making a portion of Ward Street a one-way route for west-bound traffic, it was anticipated that considerable relief would be afforded to congestion in Victoria Street. The director of town-planning was in favour of the project. There were 97 local men out of work who required assistance, said Mr. Fow. The greatest number of unemployed recorded pre\’iously was 92, but it was during a later period of the year. The Anglesea Street cutting would absorb 35 men and 12 men would be employed on the work in Maeroa Street. Men would be engaged for alternate periods of 14 days and employment would be restricted to those who had resided in the borough for the previous three months.
