ENGINEERING DISPLAYS

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Free Demonstrations of engineering features and experiments are to be given to the public tomorrow afternoon and evening at the Auckland University College by the School of Engineering. The demonstrations will include: The testing of the b.h.p. of a motorcar engine by the Froude dynamometer, the b.h.p. of a steam-engine, timber testing and an electrical and hydraulic display. The Froude hydraulic brake for testing the horse-power developed by petrol engines should be of great interest and value to motor engineers. In the working of the machine, a series of metal fins is rotated on the driving shaft of the engine. The fins are under water, which is heated by the agitation, and the power is estimated from the temperature of the water. This is the only machine of its kind in the Dominion. A Ricardo apparatus is attached to the engine driving the Froude brake, so that their simultaneous operation gives the petrol consumption for horse-power an hour.
