“GENERAL CRACK”
BARRYMORE’S FIRST TALKIE When that colourful, exciting and historical romance, “General Crack,” has its New Zealand premiere, John Barrymore, who has been called “the greatest Hamlet of this generation,” will be seen and heard in his first alltalking production. In his portrayal of the dashing General Crack, who loves and fights and hates, with equal intensity, Barrymore gives a piece of superb acting. His voice is at times softened —at other times raised to command —but at all times cultured and a delight to the tar. Marian* Nixon, as one of the fair women who love the gallant general, is charming, and little Armida, who is another “love” in her portrayal of a passionate gipsy, rises to dramatic heights in one scene at least. Technicolour sequences, which are especially beautiful in this Warner Bros, and Vitaphone production, have been used lavishly throughout the picture.
