ADMITTED TO PROBATION
SCHOOLMASTER’S OFFENCES Press Association GISBORNE, Today. Describing prisoner’s crimes as abhorrent, Mr. Justice Ostler, in the Supreme Court this morning, nevertheless found warrant for the admission to probation of Norman McLeod Martin, arraigned on three convictions of indecent assault on males.
Counsel pleaded special circumstances, stating that prisoner had an excessive weakness for drink, and that the crimes had been committed under the influence of a craving contracted during war service. The prisoner had achieved success in the school teaching profession, and would suffer heavily by the loss of his position. Counsel indicated that none, of the crimes had been committed against children. His Honour agreed that no moral harm had been done by prisoner, and that the case was not as serious as some. In view of the special circumstances he agreed to admit prisoner to probation for three years, with the stipulation of a prohibition order.
