TEACHERS’ PLIGHT COMMERCIAL STUDY WANTED “There Is a bis demand now for training in commercial subjects, and it is our' duty to provide it," said Mr. A. Burns, chairman, at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board, this morning, when a memorandum was received from the Education Department, stating that representations regarding provision for students at training colleges to specialise in commercial subjects are receiving consideration. At present certain students specialise in commercial subjects at some of the Training Colleges, but Auckland is not inC Examples were quoted of pupils who were forced to go to other oo.ieges and even to a convent to learn the commercial subjects necessary to fit them for work in district high schools and certain secondary schools. The board is to consult the principal of the Training College with a view to arranging for students to attend the PeddoTi Sfemorial Technical College for instruction.

HOLIDAYS FOR SCOUTS The Education Department anpounced that holidays may be granted bv the board to Girl Guides and Bo> Scouts on the forthcoming visit of the Chief Scout and Guide, Lord BadenP °The Nelson svstom of Bible reading was approved for Avondale South and Awanui Schools. Inquiries are to be made regardin-, the possibility of an artesian bore being made at the Training College rounds to supply water for the proposed swimming baths. These have at last been authorised by the department. which will give £SOO on condition that the board pays £3OO and the Normal and Epsom Schools £IOO each It was stated that water from the city supply would cost about £ 5 a week. On the motion of Mr. T. L. W ells the headmaster of the new open-mr school at Avondale will be required tc keep a record of any absence through sickness of pupils. It is hoped to be" able to make a scientific comparison with other schools to discover the advantages of the new type of building. .
