Maiwhariti compounded badly when caught. Waitaki Girl made a gallant attempt to make her record for this race five wins in succession, but she was required to break a record to do so, and there was no surprise when she failed at the final pinch. New Metford Improves For the Elevation Handicap, Midland, New Metford-Boneta bracket and Lady Fan were the public selections. New Metford made a one-horse race of it from start to finish. In registering 4.34 4-5 from 4.45 he made the tasks of handicap horses next door to impossible. Sarsaparilla trotted brilliantly over the last six furlongs, and it was easily his best exhibition to date. He had a narrow call over Quickftre, but did his part at the right end. Midland was always in a good position, but he was in trouble five furlongs from home. Passing the halfmile post he broke, and ruled himself out. An Inqufry A meeting of the judicial committee was held to inquire into alleged interference by L. O. Thomas, driver of Lady Fan, with Nelson Boy, driven by T. G. Fox. It was decided to dismiss the protest. Logan’s Pride Goes Fast Logan’s Pride, Sonoma and Rey Logan were the public selections for the Pioneer Handicap, and Logan’s Pride won like a high-grade performer, going 4.26 1-5 from 4.34. He
