PENTECOST ANNIVERSARY
BAPTIST TABERNACLE SERVICE UNITED CELEBRATION Representatives of various denomin- ! ations numbering about 1,000 assembled at the Baptist Tabernacle last evening when a service to commence the commemoration of the 1900th anniversary of Pentecost was held. Dr. J. J. North presidc'd. The history and meaning of Pentecost were outlined by the Rev. R. C. Roberts. Pentecost was an essential part of the Christian religion, be said. The day of Pentecost was the clay on which the Christian Church was born. In an appeal to the congregation the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher said it was necessary l’or every man to make personal preparation before any message from the Holy Spirit could reach him. It was not to be thought that the acceptance of the Holy Spirit nxeflfit some great involuntary transfiguration, which would enable a man. without any personal effort, to lead an altered life. On the contrary, it meant a humbling of seif and a candid confession of sin. All must realise their faults and strive to alter their ways before the Holy Spirit could help them. He appealed to the congregation to make the season of Pentecost a time of holy thoughts and noble aspirations. The actual anniversary of Pentecost will occur on Sunday, June 8. In Auckland celebrations will be continued throughout the week with united services which will take place in various suburban centres as well as the city, concluding with a united city and suburban service on Friday evening. Special prayer meetings will be held . .Saturday and on Sunday special l services on the subject of Pentecost i will be held. 1 The Rev. Evan R. Harries and the I Rev. W. Walker will be the speakers at a service in the Bere&ford Street I Congregational Church this evening.
