King’s Jest Beats Roman Abbey PENROSE HURDLES TO TAUMAI Winter Racing At Ellerslie FINE but cold -wintry weather was experienced for the opening at Ellerslie today of the Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern meeting, and there was a big crowd in attendance. The course was soft. Chromadyne put up a brilliant performance in carrying f>.lo to victory in the opening event, for which he was at a good price.

Catulus took charge passing the five furlongs, and at the half he was slightly in front of Air Laddie. Goldlike aid Chromadye, with Day Cass, Sir Mord. Catoma, Red Day and Brampton next. Taumai £2,290 and Sir Archie £1,936 were the main fancies for the Penrose Hurdles and. while the favourite won with ridiculous ease. Sir Archie came a bad crash at the hurdle near the six furlongs. Tlorse and rider received severe injuries, and E. Stanway, who was engaged to ride King’s Jest in the Northern Hurdle race, was substituted by R. Syme. Marble Mount was the early leader, but Taumai soon went up to him and the pair led past the stands 3 2 lengths clear of Kuiruri, St. Ames, Quincoma, Kongo, Sir Archie and Harbour View. At the six furlongs Taumai was eight lengths in front of Marble Mount, with six lengths back to Kairuri and Quincoma. Here Sir Archie, who was trailing the field, fell. The hurdle at the three furlongs saw the downfall of Quincoma (who was making a forward move) and St. Ames. Taumai was a dozen lengths in front of Kaiviiri and Harbour View at the home turn and the favourite won as he liked by fifteen lengths.
