HE IS GOOD

Sir Mond a Strong Fancy

A DUAL WINNER Of the two divisions of the Jervois Handicap, probably the first division is the stronger, with three really goo*d hacks in Chromadyne, Goldlike and Sir Mond at the head, with a stone between the first and last.

Chromadyne is a proved weight currier, and one cannot help being impressed by the way he scored at Tanranga a couple of months ago. Notwithstanding his 9.5, he bounced out :-f the barrier well clear, and bounded along in front for the whole six furlongs, being eased long before the post was reached.

It does not seem as if it will be the weight alone that may stop Chromadyne. He has yet to win over a mile, and with the track a bit heavy this will try him out. Goldlik© won at Feilding and again at Hawcra the first day, and with an ounce of luck he should have scored again two days later. The distance will be a big factor in favour of the visitor. But what is 1:o beat Sir Mond? He only beat a lot of moderates each day at Avondale last month, yet his dual successes stamped the Seremond gelding as a coming performer. He won the second day (each race over seven furlongs) with nine stone up, and he had to be extra good to pull it off. In addition to being forced to cover a bit of extra ground crossing the Sir Mond ran in behind three or four horses at the distance, and he appeared a hopeless proposition. Gray pulled him on to the outside, a.nd after one cut of the whip the big Australian gelding had gathered in the leaders in a few strides. This was an amazing burst of speed, and showed Sir Mond as a real good one. Gray will be associated With Sir Mond tomorrow, and it will be surprising if the combination fails to run into the money. As indicated elsewhere, the most danger may come from Air Laddie.
