ECLIPSE OBSERVATIONS

GOVERNMENT WITHDRAWS ASuRj lANcE. WORK TO BE DONE BY U.S. Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. For financial reasons and because of the fact that America is sending a strong observing expedition to Niuufou in connection with the totai solar eciipse in September, New Zealand is not to send a party previously arranged and for which a number of instruments had been borrowed irom Britain. This announcement was made yesterday by the Prime Minister, the Hun. G. W. Forbes, The cost would amount to £I,OOO and the value of the work would be overshadowed by that of America.

Radio research work will, however, be carried out by Mr. A. Gibbs, chief telegraph engineer, who has arranged for observations of radio signals transmitted through and along the path of the eclipse.
