WISE SPENDING
WOMEN CAN ENCOURAGE N.Z. INDUSTRIES MISS MELVILLE’S LECTURES “I would remipd Mr. Allum that any fool can earn money, but it takes a wise person to spend it.” This reply by Miss Ellen Melville at the official opening of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association's Hah of Industries yesterday afternoon, to a remark by Mr. J. A. C. Allum that women undoubtedly spent money, although men earned it. caused a good deal of amusement. The president of the association. Mr. G. Finn, in . addressing the large attendance, had mentioned the possibilities of the lectures to be given by Miss Melville on the necesity of supporting New Zealand manufactures. Mr. Finn thought it essential to have the co-operation of women, who were responsible for probably more than 80 per cent, of home purchases, in any campaign to advance local industries. Referring to Mr. Finn’s opinions on the lectures. Mr. Allum predicted highly satisfactory results from the scheme Miss Melville explained that one object of the lectures was to teach people to spend money more wisely than they had.in the past. Again. New Zealand manufacturers, in her judgment. had been much too modest in the past. She had the greatest confidence in the success of her endeavour.
