OTIRA TUNNEL RECORD

MAXIMUM TRAFFIC HANDLED Special to THE SU29 CHRISTCHURCH, Today. The tonnage record through the Otira tunnel was again broken yesterday when 4,250 tons passed through in the 24 hours from noon on Tuesday. This is- approximately the maximum the tunnel can handle in 24 hours. The loads were carried by 17 trains from Otira to Arthur’s Pass and by 15 Trains from Arthur’s Pass to Springfield. By eight o’clock this morning a further 3,500 tons had gone through. Tlio press of traffic has been caused by the condition of the bar on the Grey River, which is at present unworkable. Nine steamers are in port waiting for a chance to get away, but because of the uncertainty of the bar much of the traffic has been handed over to the Railway Department.
