HECTIC GOLF
BALLS HIT SPECTATORS NEARLY EVERY HOLE UNRULY CROWD ON LINKS Reed. 10.40 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The most amazing scenes ever witnessed on any British golf course occurred at St. Andrews, when a huge crowd, anxious to see the Tolley v. Bobby Jones match, in the Bnglish amateur championship, became ungovernable and play frequently bordered on the grotesque. Trouble began at the third hole. Hundreds of people flocked from other parts of the course and the luckless competitors at other holes found their balls trodden into the turf. Jones, at the fourth hole, hit one of the 10,000 spectators. The match took a chequered course to the turn, first Tolley and then Jones taking the lead. After the turn the crowd became quite unmanageable, despite the efforts of a great array of stewards. One player or the other hit a spectator at almost every hole. The match was square at the ISth, where there were 15,000 onlookers. The players rested while the stewards got the crowd orderly. The end came dramatically. Tolley hit the spectators near the green, but chipped within a yard of the hole, setting Jones a half-stymie. Jones failed with the putt, but gave Tolley a dead stymie. Tolley failed to loft the ball into the hole and Jones holed a one-foot putt for the match. Playing in the first round of the championship. Patrick Sterling beat Campbell (Christchurch), one up.
