The Jack Jumper Pays a Big Price
DEFEATS HOT FAVOURITE \ FLYING prince comes back it is customary to expect doubtful weather for race day at Taumarunui, 1 but for once Dame Fortune smiled on i tlle enterprising Taumarunui Racing ; Club, and for Saturday’s fixture at ' Matapuna conditions broke fine while . °pff, slonal , glimpses of the sun made , “ a “ ers Peasant for the large assemblage of visitors. Overnight rain made the track soft and holding, Retting operations were not brisk and even some large fields which faced . a,,® starte f' failed to give much of the fillip to the turnover. For the day ‘Ef totalisator staff put through and a comparison with the one-day meeting held last December when the figures were £10,247. showed a decrease of £1,005. A disappointing field faced the starter in the main event, the Presidents Handicap, but it was an interesting race, won by Flying Prince, who sports the colours of an Auckland sportsman, Mr. E. H. Cucksey. Ihe three-year-old made amends for several failures, and he won well. The prevailing conditions suited him to a nicety. A Real Surprise The most surprising incident on the day resulted in the Rangaroa Flying .Handicap, the open six furlongs. "The Jack Jumper won handsomely from the favourite, Prince Val, and therein lies the surprise, for not only did backers receive a dividend of over a third of a century, but it was the horses second attempt on the day The president, Mr. W. M. Wackrow, was as usual ready to assist, and much of the success of the gathering was due to his efforts. The secretary, Mr. Sarah, is also deserving of a word anc * had all arrangements , fulfilled to everyone’s satisfaction. , Notes on the racing, with details, are appended:— Manunui Hack Hurdles j Pukerimu, which was left out of the racebook, was a pronounced favourite ! J, he openin S event, the Manunui Hurdles, being entrusted with £l6O while next be«t backed were Waltzer, £ 67, and Parfait Amour, £6O Lupin Abbey carried but £27. The race calls for little description. The favourite went to the front from barier rise and led past the stands three lengths clear of St. Warrigal, Lupin Abbey, Parfait Amour, and Waltzer. Pukerimu led down the back, by a dozen lengths, and he turned for home with this advantage, nearest him at this stage being Lupin Abbey and Waltzer. That was also the order in which they finished. Pukerimu winning by 15 lengths, with Lupin Abbey half a length in front of Waltzer, St. Warrigal, Parfait Amour, and Spalupin followed. Maiden Handicap Backers of the favourite scored for the second time on end when Royal Visitor won the non-winners’ trace. He carried £169, but good backing also for Whenuatonga £l5B and Silver Division, £134 (the latter is in the same stable as Royal Visitor) made his price a good one. Silver Division and Star Lupin were left at the post and took no part in the race. Derry Belle went out fast to lead early from Wild Country and Wee Prince, the latter going to the front to lead across the top from Whenuatonga, Queenstown, Royal Visitor and Wild Coutnry. This was also the order into the straight, and a i great race ensued, Royal Visitor getj ting a neck decision over Whenua- ; tonga, and Derry Belle another neck : away Wild Country was fourth, right up with the placed horses, and then came Wee Prince, Land Measure and Sister White. Seven scratchings reduced the field to 18, and this obviated the necessity of dividing the race into two divisions President’s Handicap
A poor field of five lined up for the President’s Handicap, Flying Juliet, with Gray up, carrying 121 b overweight, carried £282, being well supported ahead of Thursby £173, Flying Prince £157, and Tinokoa £139. Tinokoa and Flying Prince were the early leaders from Flying Juliet, Thursby and Transformer. Along the back Tinokoa and Flying Prince were out eight lengths ahead of Thursby, Flying Juliet and Transformer. On the home turn Flying Prince had a slight lead over Tinokoa, with Thursby putting in a good run, and the other pair right out of it. Flying Prince did best in the run up the straight to win by a length and a-half from Tinokoa, who
was two and a-half lengths in front of Thursby. Transformer was fourth and Flying Juliet last. The favourite was all at sea in the going. Matiere Hack Handicap On Top was at a short price in the Matiere Hack, the chestnut carrying £360. Royal Visitor was a firm second fancy with £270, despite his 71b penalty and 41b overweight on top of
that. However, there was a mild surprise in store, Snow Prince £123 (and at a surprising price) and Valreina £143 paying the dividends. At the start On Top was left and took no part in the contest. Royal Visitor was the first to get to the front and was attended early by Gold Lily, Archieval, Valreina, ITnoeo. Snow Prince, Bahama and Red Day. At the half-mile Gold Lily was in charge from Archieval, and this pair were still in the van as they made the home turn, being followed by Valreina, Unoco and Snow Prince. Another good race followed to the judge, Snow Prince outstaying Valreina to win by half a length, with a similar distance back to Unoco. Royal Visitor was fourth, and next home were Gold Lily, Archieval, Red Day and Bahama. Matapuna Hack Handicap The Matapuna Hack was run in two divisions. Te Waitai (£2S2), Mauriaena (£172) and Sir Kay (£164) carried most money, but the respective winners, Rose Lupin (£57) and Ruling Chief (£97) were at joy prices, the former at double figures. In the first division Norval Tea and Rose Lupin shot out clear of their opponents, ..Taurimu and Sir Kay following them. Norval Tea and Rose Lupin were still together at the home turn, followed by Sir Kay (who was coming fast), Principal Boy and Land Measure. In a good race home Rose Lupin hung on to beat Sir Kay by a
neck, with The Jack Jumper a length and a-half farther back. Norval Tea stopped badly in the straight, and fourth was her portion. Next were Land Measure, Taurimu and Te KaAbbqy Queen led out of the tapes in the second division, her nearest attendants being Ruling Chief. Foreign Fancy, Mauriaena and Te Waitai. When they had settled down RulingChief was making the pace from Wild Country, Abbey Queen, Foreign Fancy, Te Kamonga, Mauriaena and Golden Pennant. The only change at the straight entrance was that Foreign Fancy faded out. In a desperate setto Ruling Chief went on to win by a neck from Abbey Queen, and there was a gap of two lengths back to Mauriaena. Te Waitai was fourth and Ferry Belle and Foreign Fancy followed. Golden Pennant stumbled and lost her rider after finishing, but no casualty was reported. Rangaroa Flying Handicap There was a great turn-up in the open sprint, The Jack Jumper defeating the hot favourite. Prince Val, and returning a dividend of over a third of a century. Prince Val carried £SOB. and there was a big drop to the second j fancy, Hoariri £IBO. while The Jack i Jumper was only supported to the ex- i tent of £24|. Prince Val was a bit I slow off the mark. White Ringlet being j the first to become prominent, being attended by Takutama, Te Monanui, Dave, Hoariri and The Jack Jumper. Takutama soon got to the head oi ! affairs and led past the Half-mile j from Dave, Hoariri. White Ringlet, i Nancy Lee. Prince Val and The Jack Jumper. Dave led across the top arid turned for home in front of Takutama, Hoariri, The Jack Jumper and Prince Val. The favourite made a run in the straight, but The Jack Jumper got through on the rails and beat him by half a length. Nancy Lee was two lengths back third, and next to arrive were Takutama, White Ringlet, Abbess and Dave. Prince Val was drawn wide out and had something to do to win. Owhango Hack Handicap There was a d'ouble surprise in the Owhango Hack, both Valreina and Abbey Queen, the winner and runnerup respectively, paying almost double | figures. Kaha £358 and Elysianor £228 were the best backed, with Val- ! reina £B4 and Abbey Queen £3O at remarkable prices. Snow Prince was the first to become prominent, beingfollowed out of the straight by Abbey Queen, Rose Lupin, Valreina. and Trishna. Abbey Queen was the pacemaker down the back from Snow Prince, Valreina, Rose Lupin, Red Day and Trishna. Approaching the top Valreina put in a fast run and was clear in very quick time, opening up a gap and turning for home well in front of Abbey Queen, Kiwinui, Snow Prince, Trishna and Red Day. Nothing had a chance of beating Valreina and tine filly won by half a length from Abbey Queen, who finished well, and Red Day was a length away third. Then came Snow Prince, Rose Lupin, Elysianor, Trishna and Unoco. Farewell Handicap Tinokoa was made favourite with £373 for the final event, but there was also a lot of money for Mosque £3G3. White Ringlet was the early leader from Abbess, Siaosi, Lunette and Mosque. Down the back White Ringlet opened up a break on the opposition and there was plenty of daylight between her and Abbess. Lunette and Mosque. The leader began to come back to her field crossing the top, and she was just clear of Abbess and Mosque at the turn for home. Mosque took charge in the straight and resisting Tinokoa’s challenge, won by’ three-quarters of a length. Lunette was a moderate third, two and a-half lengths away.
