SUBSIDY FOR THE PRESS

TURKISH ASSEMBLY HELPS NEWSPAPERS The Turkish Grand National Assembly has voted a law granting Turkish newspapers financial assistance from 1929—the year of the language reform —until 1931. Daily newspapers printed by rotary machines will receive yearly 18,000 Turkish pounds during three years; other journals will receive smaller sums. Turkish newspapers appeared for the last time in Arabic characters on November 30, 1928. For the change to Latin characters new printing plants were bought and the make-up of man}- newspapers entirely altered. Besides the additional expense, circulation fell. The Government at the time exempted all printing machines and other printing material from customs duties.
