Victoria League Celebrates Anniversary TRIBUTE TO PRESIDENT

Mr. Garland paid a tribute to the work of Miss J. A. Mowbray as president of the league. fjpODAY is Empire Lay, the 111th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, and members of the Auckland branch of the Victoria League met jn Albert Park to lay wreaths at the foot of the statue. The ceremony took place at noon. “Victoria’s influence has not passed away, and it will not. so long as this league lives to perpetuate her ideals,” said Mr. Garland; “The league has never been so prosperous, nor has it ever had so much harmony within Its

ranks —perhaps because of the influence of Miss Mowbray, who has worked so wonderfully as president. The league now numbers its members in. tens thousands, r - - - ■ “We are gathered to pay honour to a great queen—the great white queen, a*s the Maoris called her,” said Miss Mowbray. “Today similar ceremonies are being held in Canada, South Africa and all over the Empire.” Immediately after the Albert Park beremony. a wreath was placed on the soldiers’ memorial in SynYonds Street and later Miss Gerard hi id sprigs of rosemary on the graves of soldiers and sailor's in Grafton Bridge cemetery. Orr May 24, 1810, Victoria was born, the only child of the Luke of Kent. She became heir-presumptive in 1830 and ascended the -throne in 1837. succeeding her uncle, William IV. In 1840 she married her cousin, Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. She was 64 years on the Throne of England. The Victoria League was formed at the close of the Boer War and it is now an Empire-wide organisation. Its object is the promotion of closer union among British subjects, as. a remembrance of Victoria. The league’s first New Zealand activities were in Lunedin. and 21 years ago a branch was formed in Auckland.
