A Soccer Feast

CRACK CLUBS MEETING Can Y.M. be Beaten ? FE championship programme arranged at Blandford Park for tomorrow is easily the most attractive one of the season, and two of the toughest struggles seen for a long while have been set down for settlement. In the opening game the unbeaten Y.M.C.A. will be called on to prove its worth against Ponsonby, the only team so far to defeat last year’s unbeaten champions. The second match will also have an important bearing on the championship when Tramways clash with Celtic and each, with one loss apiece, will be all out to win. Manurewa meets Corinthians at Devonport. while Onehunga will he at home to Thistle.

After the lull last Saturday, the games tomorrow should be full of thrill and excitement, on account of their important bearing 1 on this season’s championship. With the four top teams all engaged, and keen for possession of the top rung of the ladder, there should be no dull moments or dwelling with the ball. Y.M.C.A. has cleaned up its, four opponents so far without the loss of a point, but is now meeting its toughest propositions, and on the form shown against the Tramways, the Ponies should thoroughly test every department of the Y.M.’s eleven. The Ponies’ defence will have a hard task in stopping the Young Men’s flying van, with stars like Kay, Chalmers and Humphries going at top*, while it will take the Y.M. left all its time to keep out Innes and Forrester on the Ponies’ penetrative right flank. Kay did not shine last Saturday, but he will take stopping tomorrow, and Chalmers is far more mercurial and dangerous at outside right than he used to be in the central berth. It should be a close finish, but on latest form the Y.M. should get home by a narrow margin. The clash of the Celts with the Trammies should orovide a lively display, and one brimful of zest, with youth’s strong challenge to the staid old-timers, who know every move in the game ✓ and how. to execute it. Trams’ only loss has been that to Ponsonby, and most of the players have loosened up now. and are right back to the top of their form. Theyoung Celts are no respecters of age or reputations, and will tear into it with plenty of vigour and dash. Their team work is improving with every victory, and their only loss this season was the first match of tlie year, when they shocked Y.M- by. setting up. a twogoal lead, only to be defeated by the odd goal when Kay came to light with a brilliant hat-trick and robbed them of victory. With Blandford Park in ideal condition for fast and hard games, there should be a record crowd attracted by so promising a menu. At Devonport the match between Manurewa and Corinthians should provide an even game, and Thistle will have a tough job to bring any points back from Onehunga against a greatly improved local team.
