A HARD PROPOSITION

CAN ONYX COME BACK TO FORM? MARE WITH WORLD RECORD Onj*x has been in training for some time past but has not raced. That her connections have not decided permanently to retire the mare is revealed by the fact that she figures among the nominations for the second day of the Canterbury Park winter meeting. Onyx, by Bogan Pointer—Cameos, was foaled as far back as 1916. She proved herself one of the best mares ever raced in this country, making a grass track world’s record of 3.13 before being retired to the brood mares’ ranks the first time. She produced one foal but failed to repeat the performance last season and her owner decided to put ler into work again. There seems little hope, however, of her ever regaining her best form and opposed to a large improving contingent, Onyx* is tackling a formidable task if she is meant to pay her way.

BRED IN THE PURPLE AMERICAN COLT’S CARD ENGAGED IN CLASSICS The debut of Mr. W. Kelly’s American imported colt, David McElwyn, is awaited with interest. When the Derbies come round the youngster will lack the age of the New Zealanders, and may require another year over his head to produce his best. David McElwyn is by the champion colt. Mr. McElwyn, 1.593, from Eallali RookJi Watts, by General Watts. He is a brother to Jessemine, who took a two-year-old record of 2.9. Mr. McElwyn was the only horse to trot to a world’s record each successive year while in training, and that he is transmitting his wonderful qualities to his stock is exemplified in Main McElwyn, \yhp raced and won more extremely fast heats Ilian any other two-year-old trotter known to history. David McElwyn is equally as well bred as the majority of Mr. McElwyn’s first crop of foals, and has everything to recommend him as a racing and stud proposition.
