TOO MUCH WATER USED
COUNCILLORS ANXIOUS A marked increase in the consumption of water is causing the general purposes committee of the Newmarket Borough Council some concern. A report received at a meeting last evening stated that, if the present increase in consumption continues, the committee will have difficulty in maintaining the account at its preesnt satisfactory level. Meanwhile every effort will be made to bring the consumption back to its normal level. During April 7,624,000 gallons were used. Although this was 437,000 gallons below the total for the previous month, it represented an increase of 1,159,000 gallons over that of April last year. This increase, together with the additional charges, imposed by the City Council, make the cost of water for the month £153 5s greater than lor April of last year. This period was an exceptionally dry one, but the increase is not accounted by this alone as over the summer months from December to April, there was an increase of more than 3,000,000 gallons, representing an increase of at least £240 for the five months.
