SURPRISE VISITORS
NEW BOROUGH CONGRATULATED j ONE TREE HILL’S FIRST MEETING Congratulations on their appointment were expressed to th-e Mayor and councillors of the newly-constituted borough of One Tree Hill by several visitors at the inaugural meeting last evening. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, and Mr. W. P. Endean, led the speeches of felicitation. “This is an historic event in One Tree Hill,” said Mr. Jordan. “I take this opportunity of congratulating you on your appointment. We feel that you will hold in your administration the confidence of the people of your borough. I wish you happiness and prosperity in your term of office.” Mr. Endean offered his co-operation in the solution of difficult problems in the borough. He assured the council that he would do his best for them if they should require his assistance in Parliament. Other speakers were Mr. E. Morton, Mayor of Onehunga; Mr. E. F. Jones, chairman of the Mount Roskilll Road Board; and Mr. A. Hewson, chairman of the Elleislie Town Board. A letter of congratulation was received from Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket. Mr. J. S. Hardwicke, the new Mayor, replied on behalf of the Mayoress, who was present, and the councillors. ‘Y can assure you,” he said, “that, as Mayor of this district, I shall do my best to carry out my duties as they should be carried out.” He said the visit was a complete surprise to him, as Cr. W. G. Mulholland had arranged it secretly, even to the presence of Mrs. Hardwicke.
