TREATY OF WAITANGI
POLITICAL ISSUE AMONG MAORIS Some time ago Ratana, the ‘ Maori prophet/* sent a petition to the natives of the Ngapuhi tribe. North Auckland, a eking them to sign it in an effort to see whether tho Treaty of Waitangi was still in existence. When Bishop Bennett visited tho North early in the year, he asked the natives not to take any notice of the petition, and said if any action were 10 be taken they should deal with it Lhemselves. Mr. Kohi Hemane, a member of tho Ngatiwhatua tribe, Kaipara, stated this morning that he has just come from a meeting in Katana’s pa, and that when he returns to his people he will deliver Ratana's request asking tho natives to sign the petition. Apparently the whole thing has become a. strong political issue among tho Maoris. From Mr. Hemane's remarks, it was gathered that tho Ratana candidates at the next Parliamentary election would endeavour to win. all the Maori seats in the House.
