NORTH SHORE REFUSE
ALTERATIONS TO DESTRUCTOR The Mayor of Takapuna. Mr. J. W. Williamson, presided at last evening’s meeting of the committee controlling North Shore destructor. Various methods designed to secure rapid combustion of garbage with a minimum of smoke and noxious gas were considered. The construction of a reinforced concrete floor, and a bunker for the storage of shavings, were authorised, the estimated expenditure being £56. It was resolved that the addition of a proposed second oil burner should be deferred for one month, as the use of shavings for the acceleration of combustion was more or less in the nature of an experiment. Further consideration was given to the representations made by Northcote at the last meeting of the committee. Northcote’s case was that, although a partner in the scheme as regards capital expenditure, it . should not be levied for until such time as the borough utilised the plant for the destruction of its refuse. In answer' to an inquiry as to whether, as a member of the committee, he had power to act in any compromise offered. Mr. A. E. Greenslade, Major of Northcote, said that he would decline to commit his council to anything. Cr. Ellis, of Northcote. gave it as I his opinion that his council was mori ally liable for its quota of operating costs only since the amended refuse I area had been agreed upon in January ! of this year. He asked the committee to make the best offer it would lor a reduction of claims prior to that date. It was resolved to offer to remit £53 7s 9d conditional upon Northcote paying the later charges amounting to £lO3 13s, and the borough agreeing to recognise liability for its quota of working expenses for all succeeding periods.
