NEW MASONIC TEMPLE
PAPATOETOE GRANTS PERMIT An application by Masonic Lodge, Papatoetoe, No. 227, for a permit to erect a temple in wood at a cost of £ 998 10s, was considered at a special meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board last evening. It was decided to grant a permit for the erection of the temple, only on condition that the building be erected in non-combustible material. It was pointed out the board had authority under the Town Planning Act to suspend building operations if such building did not conform with the proposed town planning of the district. The area where the temple is proposed to be erected is residential, and will undoubtedly be zoned as such on the approved plan. Although a building of this kind does not conflict in with the requirement of the Act, strict precautions have to be exercised in granting a building permit. It was considered that as the building was not residential in character it should be built of a non-combustible material arid to an approved design. A tender had already been accepted for the erection of the temple in wood and last evening’s decision was the result of the question being ref erred to the board by the building inspector before issuing a permit.
