FIRE NEAR PETROL
MOTORIST BREAKS LAW Press Association PALMERSTON N.. Today. A youth, Allan Bull, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, with bringing an acetylene lamp within 10ft of the fuel tank of a motor-vehicle, while such tank was being tilled with petrol. The inspector of explosives said that defendant called at a petrol station to secure benzine. The tank overflowed, the benzine was vapourised by the hot engine, and the acetylene flame ignited the fumes. The prosecution was brought by the department as a warning to the public. The magistrate commented that there appeared to be a very real danger, which was intensified when it was realised how many filling stations there were in crowded portions of the town. He fined defendant £1 and costs.
