LIMITING LORRY LOADS

PROPOSAL AT MOUNT EDEN A report is to be made to the Mount Eden Borough Council by the engineer regarding the classification of roads within the borough, in accordance with the terms of the Motor Lorry Regulations Act, 1927. At a meeting of the council last evening Mr. W. G. Lange outlined the need for such a move, which, he considered, would save a considerable sum in maintenance through preventing roads being damaged by traffic too heavy for its construction. The classification system' had already been adopted by several Auckland local bodies, notably Northcote, One Tree Hill, Mount Roskill, Manukau, Onehunga, Tamaki and Orakei. The Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, pointed out that the roads had all been designed for heavy traffic, principally through-traffic, and were all finished in permanent materials. He could not see any advantage in limiting loads on various roads. The proposal, he considered, would result in extra work for the inspector without any material advantage being reaped.
