DENTAL CLINIC OPENED
FUNCTION AT MANUREWA There was a good attendance of residents of Manurewa and surrounding districts at the opening of the dental clinic at Manurewa on Saturday afternoon, by the Hon. A. J. Stall worthy, Minister of Health. In welcoming the Minister, Mr. G. Gallaher, chairman of the clinic committee, and chairman of the Manurewa Town Board, made feeling reference to the resignation of Sir Joseph Ward, who he said had given of his best to the country. Referring to the clinic, Mr. Gallaher said the organiser had raised £l5O, of which £96 was necessary for the erection of the building, and the balance would enable the clinic to be carried on for the first twelve months without any further appeals to the public. He extended his thanks to the members of the clinic committee, who worked so hard,, and also to the public for their unanimous response, special mention being made of the services of Mrs. I'\ W. W hyte as secretary. Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, also spoke. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Public Health, congratulated the committee and workers in connection with the good work they had accomplished for the • children. The Minister said the average infant mortality for New Zealand was five in every thousand, while Manurewa's average was one to a thousand. The birthrate of New Zealand was 19 each I,(>@o, while Manurewa was as high as 32 each thousand, which was higher than that of the Dominion 30 years ago. The Minister then declared the clinic open.
