VETERAN FIRE-FIGHTERS

ONEHUNGA BRIGADE MEETING Superintendent C. E. Gilbert, who presided at the twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Onehunga Fire Brigade, held at the fire station on Saturday evening, was made the recipient of the past president’s badge and a life member’s certificate of the New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ Association. The secretary, Mr. C. A. Osborne, in making the presentation, alluded to Supt. Gilbert’s long experience in firefighting and his intimate knowledge of demonstration and conference work. Tie not only held the one-man championship of the Dominion but had just vacated -the presidential chair of the Fire Brigades’ Association. , Reviewing the work of the past year Supt. Gilbert said that the brigade had received 28 calls, 15 of which were false alarms and 13 were outbreaks of fire. On each occasion the attendance of the men liad been satisfactory and he congratulated the officers and men on the efficient manner in which they had performed their various duties. Me also congratulated the secretary, Mr. C. A. Osborne, on having completed 28 years’ service in the Onehunga brigade and occupied the post of treasurer to the United Fire Brigades’ Association since 1914. Other long-service members were firemen T, Prior (28 years), A. Young (21 years), Deputy-Supt. W. Downey (17 years), and Fireman J. Williams (13 years). The balance-sheet gave the receipts at £7B 4s, and the expenditure £55 5s Id, leaving a credit balance of £22 18s lid. Mr. C. A. Osborne was reelecte.d secretary, Mr. C. Filmer treasurer and Messrs. J. Williams and J. Eastwood auditors.
