ONE BOOT EACH
THIEVES CHASED ALONG STREET SHOPKEEPER’S CAPTURE Chased by an incensed shopkeeper, Mervyn Thomas Reeves and John Joseph McQuade were caught in Albert Street yesterday afternoon. Each man had one of a pair of stolen boots, and both were sentenced at the Police Court this morning to a month’s imprisonment. Reeves, alias Thomas Francis Reeves, a labourer, aged 25, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of boots valued at 14s 6d, and belonging to James Trubupovich. McQuade, a seaman, aged 46, pleaded not guilty to the same charge. Trubupovich, the proprietor of a boot shop in Victoria Street, said the men had been pointed out to him by a woman who came in and informed him of the theft. He chased them along Albert Street, and found that they were carrying a boot each. “Have you any questions to ask the witness?” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to McQuade. McQuade: It’s not worth while.
The Magistrate: I think you’re right. McQuade was said to have 17 previous convictions. It was his first a T pearance on a charge of theft.
Reeves explained that he had work to go to on Monday. He had stolen tho boots because he needed them. “These are all I have,” he added, pointing to the white canvas sand-shoes he was wearing. Sentence of one month’s imprisonment was imposed in each case.
