DARING THIEF
ESCAPES AFTER CHASE ATTEMPT AT REMUERA A daring- attempt to break and enter the premises of Mr. J. E. Russell, 36 Victoria Avenue, Remuera, was made by a man during the week-end. Mr. Russell and three of his guests chased the intruder, who escaped into the property of Dr. J. Somerville, who lives two houses further down, and was not seen again. The rooms in Mr. Russell's house were brilliantly lighted at the time of the attempt. Six persons were in the house. Mr. Russell and three other men were playing billiards, while Mrs. Russell had gone to bed in the only room in the house that was not lighted. The other occupant, a maid, was in a room at the rear of the house.
The alarm was given by Mrs. Russell, who was in bed. At about 10.30 p.m. she saw a head appear over the win-dow-sill and a man commence to climb into the room. She at once screamed and attracted the attention of the men who were playing billiards. They chased the intruder, but he had a big start and evaced them by turning into a property close* at hand.
