92 YEARS OLD TOMORROW MR. EDWIN J. SURFTEN Special to THE SUN COROMANDEL, Today. Born in London 92 years ago, Mr. Edwin J. Surflen, of Coromandel, will celebrate his birthday tomorrow. Going to sea at the age of 14, Mr. Surflen had many strenuous experiences, and tells many stories of the lands he visited. He left the sea in 1856, and joined his brother in Sydney in a search for gold in the Snowy River district. Later, he obtained a share in a gold mining claim at the head of the Murray River, and about 1567 he and hie brother joined the gold rush to the West Coast of New Zealand. They achieved success, and in IS7I Mr. Surflen -went to Thames, where he became manager of Moanataiari Union and Lord Nelson mines. To years later he came to Coromandel to manage the Pacific mine. ITis life underground, however, had affected his health, and he decided to settle near the sea, and bought Waimate Island near Coromandel Harbour. He lived there for 16 years with his wife, and then settled in Coromandel. His wife died ten years ago.
