TOPICS IN SPOR T

THE Sharkey-Seliinelingr fight for the heavy-weight championship is less than a month away. It is beinp marked by an absence of the lavish preliminary “ballyhoo** which used to precede the Dempsey and Tunney affrays. There is little cruide to form. Sharkey is an erratic customer, and the German has had a long lay-off. More interesting to New Zealanders was th* recent announcement that Tom Heenev was back in Xew York ready to fight again. Honest Tom has only a hundred to one chance of staging a successful come-back, but hope springs eternal in the old-timer's breast.

Tt is gratifying to have the Mayor's assurance that the pro posal to establish municipal golf links in Auckland is being pushed ahead. Visitors to Wellington, for instance, who have seen something of the popularity of the municipal links in the Windy City, are acutely conscious of how Auckland has lagged behind in this respect, not only from the point of view of sport, but as a sound money-making proposition.

So far, the chief feature of the Australian Eleven's tout- ha'been the wonderful success of the ei-Xew Zealander. C. G. Grimmett. with the ball. But it may prove to be a two-edged weapon The little googlie bowler has so completely overshadowed every other trundler on the side, with the exception of Hornibrook. that the others haven't had a look in. If anything happens to Grimm ett, the side might easily find itself in Queer Street. Another disquieting feature is that, apart from Woodfull and Bradman, few of the batsmen have shown any semblance of form on the tricky English wickets. The side has a distinct batting “tail,” and it badly needs a stock right-hander to come to light. But there is time enough yet for some of the youngsters to prove their worth. May it be soon is the fervent wish of Australia.
