EPSOM JOTTINGS

GOOD TRACK YESTERDAY NO WATCHES REQUIRED Harrowed, after the heavy early morning showers the dirt track at Alexandra Park was in excellent order yesterday morning. Several trainers gave their charges sound work, but there was no attempt at time-making. The Abbey and Explosion worked two miles at a useful clip, the former revelling in the task as has become his fashion. The Gold Bell speed merchant should be cherry ripe next month. * * Evelyn Locanda, anxious to improve the pace, pleased in a work-out over a similar journey. Nightingale has the Brent Locanda mare in tine buckle. The same trainer has Nelson Tasker well built up, and the aristorcrat showed a return of his old dash over a short course. Gold Jacket and Torpedo Huon were companions over # a two-mile bout. After traversing 12 furlongs at a steady gait they ran over the final half-mile at slightly better than a 2.20 clip. The black demon relished his job and looked as if he could have gone the last quarter in rare time. Mignonne was not fully extended over the same course. The Matchlight mare was not keen to begin, but once on the route paced freely, making no attempt to bore out. She rattled bver one of the quarters at a rate whiuh demonstrates she has plenty of speed. Chrystal, Typist and the Peter Moko —Peggy O’Neill filly were associated in a steady essay over three circuits. The filly is showing good promise. * * * George Webb could not get the Logan Pointer—Sylvie mare to tackle her task seriously. A nice-turned mare with fine action and promise of speed, she is a decidedly lazy worker. Misfortune appears to follow trainer W. Cockbill. Direct Morning, who is looking a picture, and was working with plenty of dash, pulled up lame, there being a recurrence of an old leg trouble. Joe Gee had the straps on his 1930 Derby colt by The Triumph from that good mare Kewpie. The youngster, a sturdy, robust customer, handled himself in impressive style and has a good idea of what is required of him. The genial Joe deserves to have a good one.

Old Tradesman is bounding along in his customary fashion, and he is thriving on the tasks allotted him by owner Sandall. If the handicapper is not severe on Tradesman, he will pick up some more place money.

Light work -was the portion of Dan Direct, who appeared to lighten up somewhat after his strenuous twomile effort at Cambridge. The 12 furlongs at Epsom may suit him better. The grey colt by Nelson Fame from Ruby Huon is being indulged in a spell.

Anseline showed that she is just as gay as ever by trotting soundly and freely* over several circuits. The Nut Ansel mare is a hardy annual, and there is still a good race left in her.

An interested spectator at Epsom yesterday was Mr. Basil Mitchell, son of Mr. J. A. Mitchell, of Padlock, Loch Moigli fame. While naturally keen in light harness affairs, Mr. Mitchell, jun., takes more interest in stock of another kind, being an enthusiast in cattle-breeding.

Two fine youngsters-r-both chestnuts —are responding well to the education being bestowed upon them by A. J. Julian. They are productions of Worthy Bond, one being from Miss Rolfe, dam of Medusa and Rolfe Audubon, and the other from that rare performer Haricot. The latter’s colt gives promise of being a speedy customer.

TROTTER’S DEATH

FATE OF PETROLEUSE The brood more Petrolouse, owned by Mr. P. Watson, is dead. Petroleuse. by Petereta from a Galindo mare, was a useful trotter a couple of years ago, and with a fund of royal blood she looked like making a name for herself at the stud. However, she left one representative, a yearling colt by Travis Axworthy. EXTRA PERMIT ALLOCATED TO WAIPA CLUB
