WAITEMATA COUNTY
CLASSIFICATION OF ROADS The recent spell of exceptionally fine weather enabled much good work to be done throughout the Waitemata County, in preparing for the winter season, according to a report submitted to a meeting of the county council this morning by the engineer, Mr. A. Murray. The engineer reported that it was expected that the contractor would complete Crowe’s bridge during the coming week, and an endeavour would be made to metal the approaches. Plans illustrating the proposed deviation of the roadway and the location of the new bridge to replace the old wooden structure near Jvaukapakapa. had been forwarded to the Main Highways Board for preliminary approval and it was hoped that authority would be received for the structure to be put in hand. The engineer recommended that the whole of the county road classification be revised to bring it more in conformity with present-day conditions, so that the council could receive the support of the Department of Transport in enforcing the classification. Referring to a communication from the Commissioner of Transport concerning the fixing of speed limits throughout the county, the engineer suggested that this was a more effective way of preventing damage to the roads than by imposing load restrictions. He recommended that a general speed limit for the county on roads other than those permanently paved be fixed at 35 miles an hour for motor-cars, and that a table of speed* affecting motor-trucks be on the line* set out under the Alotor Lorry Regulations.
