GIFT FROM NAVY

HOUSE PROPERTY FOR DEVONPORT SITE ON MT. VICTORIA The possibility of Mount Victoria, Devonport, being equipped with a tea kiosk at the summit and of the motorroad up the hill being reconditioned, is revived by the transfer to the Devonport and Mount Victoria Domain Board of a four-roomed house on the brow of the hill, overlooking the City. The house was built originally for the Defence Department, when the firecontrol station for the fortifications of Auckland was centralised in a specially-armoured room. Later, the Navy took control of the magazines and one of the naval ratings occupied the house. Subject to the present tenant’s lease, the Navy has handed over the property, free, to Devonport for public use. Mr. Alex. Harris, M.P., has been negotiating for this during the- last two years.
