TWO CANVASSERS BEFORE COURT ONE GIVEN PROBATION Two canvassers who had failed to account for sums of money which they handled in the course of their business of selling vacuum cleaners appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., In the Police Court this morning. Sidney Edward Taylor was admitted to probation for two years, and Ross de Villiers was remanded for a week for sentence. Taylor, a salesman, aged 26, pleaded guilty to four charges of failing to account for sums totalling £33 2s 6d to Electric Imports, Ltd. The dates cf the offences were given as in December and January. Mr. W. Campbell, probation officer, said the young man’s parents were in Wellington, and he could get work there. Taylor was admitted to probation for two years and ordered to make restitution as the probation officer directed. De Villiers, a dental mechanic, hailing from South Africa, pleaded guilty to seven charges involving a total sum of £6O Ss. Chief-Detective Hammond said the man had been in the country only two years and, like Taylor, had been em: ployed selling vacuum cleaners. According to the probation officer, the Rev. Jasper Calder was interested in accused and wished for a remand. Nothing was known previously against the man. De Villiers was remanded for a week for sentence.
