FIGHTING FIRES
LONG HISTORY OF LONDON FIRM BEGAN 250 YEARS AGO A director of an English manufacturing firm 250 years old arrived in Auckland this afternoon. Mr. R. E. Stubington. of Merryweather and Sons. Limited. London, manufacturers of fire-engines and firefighting appliances, intends to tour New Zealand, visiting the agencies of his organisation. In the year 1700 Merry weather and Sons were manufacturing fire-fight ing appliances to suit the needs of ti e times. Manuals and large squirts were their stock in trade. Today the object is to knock a. fi ■ out rather than flood it out.” said Mr. Stubington on the Ulimaroa today. “Water in large quantities often dot < more damage than the flames. That is why modern manufacturers have pr< • duced high-pressure pumps which arc used in England on every possible o« - casion to boost up the existing water pressure." Mr. Stubington intends while in New Zealand to go into the question of oil fires and their prevention. Because <,f the increasing use of oil and the large quantities transported and stored *! I over the world, this problem is engag - ing the urgent attention of manufac - turers who specialise in providing firefighting apparatus.
