CHURCH MENACED
POPE WATCHING POLITICAL TREND IN MALTA OPPOSED TO STRICKLAND Reed. 9.5 a.m. ROME, Sunday. The Vatican’s objection to the Maltest Constitutional Party is understood to extend only so far as the party is Lord Strickland’s instrument. The Pope is not concerned about politics, but has a deep regard for the Church’s interests, which it is felt are menaced by the Premier’s policy affecting age-old religious customs which he desires to northernise and to formalise. On the eve of the general election in Malta, on April 28, an order was promulgated to all churches from Monsignor Gonzi, the bishop, which caused profound consternation. The order condemned voting for the Constitutional Party as a mortal sin. and prohibited the party’s adherents from approaching the Easter communion and receiving absolution, unless they recanted their support of the party. Citizens were forbidden to attend meetings and horse races which were organised by the party.
