POLA’S PEARLS IN PLEDGE
GUARANTEED TO GERMAN SHERIFF A £IO,OOO NECKLACE Miss Pola Negri, in Paris recently, told a newspaper representative her own story of how a sheriff’s officer in Berlin, where she was staying with her husband, Prince Mdivani, seized her pearls, said to be worth £IO,OOO. “My husband and I w’ere surprised,” she said, “by the arrival of the sheriff’s officer at our hotel. He demanded £I,OOO, which we were supposed to put down as a guarantee against our departure from Germany. LEFT IN TRUST “Apparently someone, who alleged that he had a contract with me for my appearance in films in Europe, had obtained a sheriff’s order, which, under German law, can be very inconvenient tor foreigners. “When the sheriff arrived and demanded a guarantee from a banker against our departure it was impossible for us to comply. So to be rid of him we handed over a pearl necklace valued at £IO,OOO. We haVo since furnished the banker’s guarantee, and the necklace has been returned.”
