The Government authorities at Kaifend, capital of the Honan Province, report a terrible massacre in the Yungyang district on April 23. A large horde of bandits looted every village, leaving a wide swathe of desolation, rapine and murder in their wake. An area of 250 square miles was completely laid waste, 9,000 houses being burned to the ground and 15,000 people killed or carried off for ransom. Magistrates and officials were tortured horribly and killed.
