One Killed, One Hart in Head-on Collision
SMASH DURING FOG SHOCKING INJURIES RECEIVED From Our Otr« Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. Two people were injured, on. fatally, in a head-on collision between two motor-cars on the Hamilton - Morrinaville Road, near Newstead, about ten o’clock last evening. The victims of the accident are: Killed. —Mr. Thomas B. Shaw, aged 23, a son of Sir. David Shaw, farmer, of “Barton,” Tauwhare. Injured.—Miss Winifred Randle, aged 19, daughter of Me. P. Randle, assistant manager of the Matangl Glaxo Factory, head injuries and fractured skull. Condition serious. The car was driven by Mr. H. Shaw, of Tauwhare, a cousin of the do. ceased, and occupied by Mr. T. Brown, Miss Randle, and Mr. T. Shaw. It was going in the direction of Hamil. ton, and collided head-on with a car driven by Mr. L. H. Monteith, farmer. Eureka, who was accompanied by hig brother, Mr. A. F. Monteith. The Monteith brothers, who arg both members of the Marist senior Rugby team, Hamilton, were return* ing from a football practice. The crash, which occurred three-quarters of a mile from the Newstead Hall, on the Hamilton side, on a straight stretch of road, was heard by Mr. R. Shaw, who had stopped at the halL He hastened to the spot, and conveyed the injured to the Waikato Hospital in his car. Both Miss Randle and Mr. T. Shaw suffered from shocking head injuries, from which the latter died at 3.30 this morning. Miss Randle suffered a severe fracture at the base of the skull, and extensive head injuries. Heg condition is grave. Both cars were extensively damaged os the result of the collision, which threw the occupants on the road. Mr. Shaw's car turned a complete somersault and righted itself. Mr. T. Shaw and Miss Randle were in the back seat, but were thrown clear. In view of the tangled wreckage viewed after the crash, the other occupants of Mr. Shaw's car and the Monteiths had miraculous escapes. Apart from minor bruises, scratches, and shock, none of them was hurt. The cause of the collision is not clear, but the night was foggy, and Mr. Shaw is said to have been dazzled by the headlights of the approaching car.
