ROTORUA NOTES

The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, presided at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday evening. A lethal box for the destruction of 1 stray animals was accepted from Miss 1. Robinson. Advice was received from the Native Affairs Department that there was no legislation which enabled Whakarewarewa Native Pa to be excluded from the borough and at the same time not be included in the county. It was decided to ask if legislation in this direction would be considered. Councillors drew attention to articles which have appeared in City ! newspapers criticising the state of Whakarewarewa. and Cr. Johnson suggested that a toll of some sort be instituted which could be used for improvement. He thought some steps should be taken. The Mayor said he had recently interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs, who had promised to visit Rotorua shortly to go into the question. A letter was received from the Komiti Marae (Ohinemutu) supporting the toil suggestion. The conductor of the Municipal Band. Mr. Heley. notified that he wished to resign. A committee was set up to go into the question of forming a municipal band. St. John Ambulance. Rotorua branch, is to receive a donation of £2 2s. The sum of £ 6 ss. proceeds of percentage granted bv Staig’s Enterprises, has been given to the Rotorua Women’s j Club. t Commissioner Sanford has inspected the local troop of Scouts and expressed satisfaction at the- progress made, and general appearance of the boys. The commissioner remarked that the standard of scout troops in the South Auckland districts was an excellent one and the only iroops which paraded in full dress, i.e., with staves. He complimented the patrol leaders on their efficient control, and hoped that they were making preparations for the visit of the Chief* Lord BAden- , Powell* next yeajr*
