ALL WORK STOPPED

HINDUS PROTEST AT GANDHI’S ARREST POLICE FIRE ON MOBS United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyrigh' Reed. 9.50 a.m. DELHI, Tuesday. There is a complete cessation of work in Hindu business quarters in nearly every city in India today as the result of Gandhi’s arrest, and the military police are mobilised to prevent outbreaks. In Howrah, near Calcutta, a mob of 3,000, who attacked a small police band, were fired upon. The authorities last evening began vigorous precautions, which were redoubled today, against disturbances. In the early morning Calcutta resounded to the tramp of armed men and light horse troops, who were out for the first time for many years. The Calcutta Scottish were called out on Sunday night and are at present at the reserve headquarters at Calcutta. At Bombay a monster meeting of 100,000 persons was addressed from seven different platforms by Mrs. Sarojini Naidu and other speakers. Mrs. Naidu introduced six Americans seated with her who, she said, wished to congratulate the nation on Gandhi's arrest.
