DUNEDIN IN DARKNESS
STREET LIGHTS CUT OFF TO SAVE POWER SERIOUS WATER SHORTAGE From. Our Own Correspondent DUNEDIN, Today. The water shortage in Otago has become so serious that the generating station at Waipori is in danger of being held up by the low-level of the lake. Last night all street lights in Dunedin were cut off in an attempt to conserve power and save water, and the city will remain in darkness until heavy rains fall and give a fresh supply of energy. Last night was clear and the moon gave a certain amount of light, but if an overcast night occurs this week or should the restrictions still be in force after the moon has waned the lights may be switched on again. At the rate at which the Waipori water level has been falling recently it is estimated that the city’s supply of electricity will be sharply curtailed within a fortnight.
