WOMAN KILLED BY CAR
“APPEARED TO HESITATE” ACCIDENT IN WELLINGTON Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. At the inquest concerning the death of Lucy Jane Hampton, who was killed in Lambton Quay by a motor-car in March, evidence was given by a passenger that he and the driver "had each had two drinks. The driver was careful and gave warning at intersections. Tho woman appeared to have stepped back in front of the car. Two women who saw the accident also said she and a friend with her appeared to hesitate and to step back and there was nothing to show that the motorist was at fault. The coroner remarked that these women had come forward in consequence of what they saw in the papers and that it would have been better if, instead of communicating with the interested parties, they had gone to the coroner direct. Then there would be no suggestion that their evidence was not quite disinterested. A verdict was returned that deceased died from injuries received as the result of being knocked down by a car driven by Leo Joseph Smith.
