“CHANGE ANZAC DAY”
NEAREST SUNDAY SOUGHT BY MANUFACTURERS SUPPORT IN AUCKLAND “Change the observance of Anzac Day to the Sunday nearest the actual date.’’ This attitude to the question of the date for Anzac Day was defined bv the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association at its meeting yesterday afternoon, when a resolution to the effect was carried on the motion of Mr. G. Mills Palmer.
“We might very well support the suggestion,” remarked the president of the association, Mr. George Finn, when a communication from the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation was received on the question. One speaker said the practice of holding Anzac Day on April 25, a date falling mostly vm week days, had “been wished on the community.” He declared that public sentiment actually was opposed to the practice and Sunday would be generally preferred as the day of observance.
“Most returned soldiers are opposed to the practice, too,” said Mr. Mills Palmer. “Only a few oflicials of the Returned Soldiers’ Association desire to retain the present order and are bound to adhere to their opinion at all costs. Labour and the general public would support a change.” Other speakers remarked on the interference with business arrangements caused by the present system and the losses in earnings, in some cases, to employees.
