SURRENDERED TO POLICE
MAN CHARGED WITH FALSE PRETENCES ELEVEN CHARGES INVOLVED The sum of between £SO and £-30 was stated by Mr. Alan Smyth to be involved in charges of issuing valueless cheques to be preferred against Alfred Randolph Barton, a surveyor, 27, who appeared in the Police Court today on two charges of false pretences. Accused, who was arrested by De-tective-Sergeant McHugh for obtaining two sums of £5 from John Hook on April 19 and 21 by valueless cheques. Applying for bail, Mr Smyth said that although uo. complaint had been made against accused, he had surrendered yesterday toi the police to have affairs cleared up. He had been surveying in the bush, but on account of his wife, he had been compelled to come to Auckland, and had issued two cheques on a friend’s promise to loan him £2O, which, however, did not materialise. Under the influence of drink he had gone on issuing valueless cheques. Detective-Sergeant Kelly announced that accused had confessed to issuing cheques which would involve 11 charges. The police officer pointed out that if released, on his own recognisance, accused might walk off. Mr. Hunt: He walked in himself. Barton was remanded until May S, and bail was fixed at £SO in accused’s own recognisance.
