BADMINTON

PARNELL ACQUISITIONS DEPARTURE OF T. KELLY By SHUTTLE Since last season several changes have occurred among local clubs, but with increasing memberships most clubs will be stronger than ever, and there is a probability that more newel übs will appear. Parnell opens tomorrow in the Parnell Library Hall. The change from JSt. Mary’s, which is more suitable*, is due to certain obscure by-laws, which prohibit the use of the spacious church hall, with its excellent height, for such gatherings. In view of the limited membership of the clubs using tho hall, players have felt with some justice that the regulations might in this instance have been waived without doing any harm. As it happens, the City Council will reap the benefit in the form of increased revenue from the Library Hall. The Library Committee of the council has, however, met the club generously wherever possible.

The 'departure of T. Kelly for his home in Ireland was a serious loss sustained by local Badminton during the close season. It is extremely unlikely that Kelly will return to New /•ealand. His play improved immensely while he was here, and he left with a share in both the mixed and the men s doubles titles, while the season before he had won the singles title at Napier. A fine sportsman as well as an extremely clever player, Kelly will be missed by his club. In the absence of Kelly, neither the men’s nor mixed titles will be defended by the holders. Miss Eilett may be partnered by one of her brothers. Parnell has been materially strengthened by the acquisition of Miss D. Eilett, the Misses K. and M. Waters, and Mr. Ivan Eilett, of the Northern Club, Mangere. All these players find it more convenient this year to play in town. /The ladies, particularly, will strengthen Parnell in its weakest department of play. Miss Marjorie McFarlane. who. with regular practice, will become one of the most skilful of women players, is this season playing with the Remuera Club (Captain Parker’sJ. This club has acquired several new players, including some experienced men. and with its strong membership should soon be contesting the position of older clubs.
