Good Rugby Fare

PONSONBY v: TRAINING COL.

Technicals Play City

TWO good matches have been set for the oval at Eden Park tomorrow and now tjhat players are settling into their stride interesting Rugby should be seen. The three o’clock game will be between'Ponsonby and Training College. Although Grammar heat the teachers by a margin of three points on Saturday last, College's brand new team put up a good display and, being itself partial to the open style of play, should provide Ponsonby with more strenuous opposition than last year’s champions had to contend against last week.

For the early game the ground will be occupied by Technical Old Boys and City. Last week Technical put up a noteworthy performance in defeating University, last season’s runners-up, by 14 points to 6, and tomorrow’s performance will again be watched with interest. Although City was defeated by six points, the team put up a good performance. This season City has been strengthened by the inclusion of Ruru. the Grafton winger, and Arnold Berridge. the ex-Ponsonby plaver. A close game is expected, with Technical slightly the better fancied. On No. 2 ground, University should be able to score a win over Grafton, and at the Showgrounds Grammar Old Boys should bo too strong for College Rifles. RUGBY PROBLEM

WHAT CONSTITUTES A “MARK?” N.Z.R.U.’S RULING Press Association WELLINGTON, Thursday. Two questions affecting the rules of Rugby were decided by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union last evening. The first was a ruling as to what actually constitutes a “fair catch” under the present rule, whereby a player claiming a “fair caA.ch” must immediately make a heel mark. The second dealt with the action to be taken when a boll is put in the scrum and goes z'ight through. * The decisions finally arrived at were:—(l) A “fair catch” can only be allowed when the player claiming it has both feet on the ground and claims the catch by making a heel mark; (2) a penalty should be awarded only when in the referee’s opinion ' the player putting the ball in the scrummage intentionally does so in such a manner that it cannot be* hooked. In all other cases of the bail passing right through a fresh scrummage should be ordered. Mr. A. C. Kitto asked if a player who jumped in the air, caught the ball and came down and made a heel mark could be awarded a. mark. Mr. S. S. Dean: It is not a mark. Mr. Kitto: What if an All Black who toured in 1924 says a mark can be awarded ? Mr. Dean: Well, I would like to know where it was allowed. The 1924 team, he added, found it practically impossible to get marks. The question, had been discussed at the Imperial Rugby Conference. There a mark was regarded purely as a defensive measure, and it had been maintained that it should be awarded only in a player’s own territory.

“SPLITTING STRAWS”

DUNEDIN AUTHORITY’S VIEW Special to THE SUN DUNEDIN, Thursday. Interviewed today, the president of the Otago Rugby Union (Mr. Harry Harris), said he disagreed with the ruling of tho X.Z.R.U. Management Committee as to what constituted a fair catch or mark. Mr. Harris, who was one of the managers of the Maori team which toured England and France in 3 926, said that when the Maoris were playing in and a player jumped, caught the ball, and made a mark with his heel immediately on landing, the mark was allowed.
