BIBLE SUNDAY

GOOD WORK OF SOCIETY ALL CHURCHES COMBINE Bible Sunday will be observed in all Protestant churches in Auckland next Sunday, when special reference will be made to the world-wide activities of the British and Foreign Bible Society. This has been arranged by the Auckland auxiliary of the society and the Council of Christian Congregations. Except in Russia, where an iron despotism has for the time being barred the road, the demand on the Bible is today stronger than ever before. The history of the Bible Society is one of the romances of modern philanthropic enterprise. The society began in a very humble way at the time when Britain was marshalling its forces to save Europe from Napoleonic domination, and in the 126 years since then it has never modified its original objective, “To encourage the wider circulation of the Holy Scriptures, without note or comment.” It has acted as agent for the Christian Church, It lias made it possible for dwellers in the remote places of the earth to have the Scriptures in their own language, at a purely nominal cost. The story of colportage is an epic of courage and self-sacrifice. The society assists New Zealand by prpviding cheap Braille versions for the blind. The society depends for its funds wholly on voluntary subscription, and the public will shortly have the opportunity of supporting this missionary enterprise.
